Alyssa’s Journey: Walking for Hope
Alyssa’s journey with Huntington’s disease (HD) began at home. Her mother has HD, and before that, her grandfather also lived with the disease. “I grew up around it,” Alyssa shared. “When my mom started developing symptoms, it was atypical. The doctors didn’t know much, so I was the one explaining it to everyone. That’s when I realised I wanted to raise awareness and support this cause.”
Her passion for raising awareness led her to the Walk 4 Hope. The first walk she participated in was during the pandemic, when the event went virtual. “It was a family day out, even though we were all walking in different places. We made it fun by posting photos online, and we’ve continued the tradition every year as Team Smith. This will be our fourth year.”
The Walk 4 Hope became more than just a day out—it deepened Alyssa’s connection to Huntington’s Australia. “Through Westmead Hospital, I got linked to Huntington’s Australia and our support coordinator has been phenomenal. I also volunteer at the Carer’s Representative Program in NSW. It’s been a fantastic experience.”
For Alyssa, staying positive is key, especially for her own wellbeing.
“I try to make the positives outweigh the negatives. Giving back and participating in the walk helps—it’s not just about raising funds but about connecting with others.”
She continues, “It’s a fun, family-friendly day and we have participants of all ages. Even if you don’t have HD in your life, it’s a great way to show support.”
As she reflects on her experience as the carer of her mum, she encourages others to take the first step:
“You’re not alone. There’s more support out there than you think, and we’re all in this together.”
