First US participants receive SKY-1505, experimental HD treatment
In an update today, Skyhawk Therapeutics announced that the first participants in its United States study trial for SKY-01515 have received their initial dose of the investigational treatment for Huntington’s disease.
The expansion of FALCON-HD into the United States is encouraging news for the Huntington’s disease community. It marks an important step forward for the SKY-0515 trial and creates more opportunities for people to participate in research. However, it is important to remember that the study is still underway, and we must wait for the results to know whether the treatment is safe and effective.
Although the clinical study is not currently enrolling participants in Australia, continued trial expansion in new countries is a promising sign. Read on to learn more about what the news means for the global HD community.
What we know so far about SKY-0515
With the latest addition of testing sites in the United States, more than 50,000 doses of SKY-0515 have now been administered. At this point, researchers are gaining more valuable data, allowing them to continue measuring the efficacy and safety of the HD treatment.
In September this year, Skyhawk Therapeutics reported 15-month results from Phase 1/2 of its SKY-0515 treatment. Participants who had received the treatment showed meaningful improvement on the cUHDRS (composite Unified Huntington’s Disease Rating Scale), with benefits appearing at all four components of the scale, including daily functioning, movement, processing speed, and reading speed.
What makes SKY-0515 such a promising treatment for Huntington’s disease is its dual-target approach. Designed to lower both mutant huntingtin (mHTT) and PMS1 – the two proteins linked to Huntington’s disease progression – the once-daily oral medication could be a simpler treatment option for people with HD if proven effective.
What’s next for this clinical study?
At this stage, SKY-0515 remains investigational, and hasn’t yet been proven safe or effective. However, encouraging news such as its expanding global trial, coupled with encouraging early results, delivers hope for researchers and the Huntington’s disease community.
Read the Skyhawk Therapeutics’ community letter from today for more information on the trial’s expansion and results so far. Huntington’s Australia will continue to update you with news on SKY-0515 and other clinical trials relevant to our community as we learn of them.
